1916J on eBay

This 1916J Electric has just sold on EBay.com

Wrong fenders and seat, missing the very hard to find magdyno, electrics box and electric rear light.
As well as other small parts, exhaust, linkages, etc.

It's too late for our Pioneer events in the UK and also the Pre 16 events in the US and it still made over $21k.
It's because they are such a great machine to ride.

1913 parts help needed.

I got this message from Denny who is looking for some parts, maybe someone can help.

Hi Ian, I am searching for parts for my 1913 Harley Single belt
drive. I am searching for a usable rear wheel assy and right side
gas tank. I am not restoring this bike just getting it driving again, so the parts don't have to be in real good shape just usable or repairable. My bike has no paint at all and very little nickel left and I only plan to oil it to preserve it not a full restore so new parts will not look right with the rest of the finish. may have to buy
new and try to rust the new parts.
Maybe someone knows a source. Thank You for the help!

Seat sorted

A patch cut out to support the centre and then cut to expose the diamonds down the spine.  Then glued to join the split and attach the patch, job done.

Jones 60 mph

Spare Jones speedometer. The higher the mph range, generally the later the unit.

Jones 50 mph speedometer

Lovely rare teens 50 mph Jones speedometer came on the 8X but its another job that needs doing.
Luckily the speedo head doesn't need repair but the cable does.  It's fiddly but should be repairable otherwise I will need to fashion a complete new cable and then attach the ends.

It really is a lovely part.  But again I have a spare so the owner won't need to worry about speeding tickets!

Persons seat repair

I just got this 12 single in.  The seat is torn and needs repairing.  I have a spare; exactly the same barring the name tag, so the bike will still be ride-able.  It shouldn't take long after I get the patch sorted.

But I got the Vincent back from Rod recently and I need to get some miles on the new clutch, can't do everything!

Excuses

No posts recently as I've been away riding in the USA for the last few weeks.  Always a treat, this time from Chicago via Milwaukee and then out West through the farmlands and up through the Rockies.

Over 400 photos, too many.  Highlights of the trip were the HD Museum and the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa.  Utah is bleak, no gas stops for 120 miles after Grand Junction, Colorado, then another 110 after Green River, need to fill up.

I'll sort the good early bikes and post some.

Indian chief is finished.

Last touch was the speedo. I went for a shake down run and everything was great bar the speedo wasn't working.
It turned out to be the drive unit on the front wheel; the centre was missing and the inner composite wheel had broken.

All working correctly now.

More Munster

Munster delights

Kevin and I went to see Gerhard and Christian in Munster, Germany.  I got to know them through buying an old bike, usual thing.

This is just part of the collection.

Gas tank

1916 gas tanks.  An original paint example and a new repop.  The original looks great but it would be wrong to paint it and fit it to a restoration.

Very nice repop tanks. Excellent fit.

16J Foot clutch

My 16J build has an original HD clutch rocker but it is the single speed version.
I picked up this repop from Christian Henn.

He also had the correct foot-board rail that the rocker sits on.

Old Bikes at Veterama

Thor

I had a 1910 but not a patch on this beauty.

1924 HD

Plenty of quality accessories always look good.

Veterama, Mannheim.

Ferry from Hull to Rotterdam, 600 kms to Mannheim, Germany and well worth the visit.  It was a lot wetter this year than last but still a great source for hard to find parts.

We called in to the Yesterdays showroom in Nederweert, Netherlands on the way ... excellent.

Lovely 1911 Excelsior

Stunning Indian twin.

Original paint

I took the trans tower off the Chief to inspect the gearbox and ensure everything was in order, which it was, but I couldn't stop myself from cleaning part of the inside of the chain cover.

It showed the original colour as Indian Red.

I;ve done this before, again on a Chief, and after identifying the colour, repainted the complete bike to get it back to original.  If the hippy chic gets too much at least we know how she started out.

Top off the transmission and drive sprocket as well.

All back together without problem.

Maintenance

There always seems to be things to do with old bikes.  It's not because of neglect or poor quality parts, it's just that old things tire, wear and eventually fail.  But that's part of the hobby.

I was out riding the 9B last week and after a few miles the bike just died.  I tried everything, including going completely through the carb, more than once, but eventually worked out that it was the magneto.

I know for sure that it hasn't needed repair in the last 20 years so that's not too bad, but it still needs doing.

I've sent it to Andy and Steve; the Magneto Guys in Hailsham but they are so busy I won't see it again before the New Year.

That's the problem with dealing with the good guys ... they're always busy.

Fortunately I have a friend in California who has one I can borrow until mine comes back.

Bosch ZE1, 45 mm shaft height, clockwise rotation.

Stewart and Corbin speedometers.

Friend Kevin has these nice early speedos for sale.

Corbin is 80 mph teens up to early 1923.

Stewart is rarer but less popular teens speedo; very hard to get parts for.

I have a friend who makes adaptors so that you can run the Stewart speedos with a Corbin cable; good idea.

Number plate.

Well I at last got round to sorting out the number plate on the 9B.

It was a nasty stamped alloy type, not very teens.

But now it is a more period looking hand painted item.  Maybe I should mount it (very) slightly lower.
